When we were in LA we spent a lot of time in Echo Park and one morning we are at a cafe/bookstore called Stories. They have a good size book store in the front with a cafe in the back and outdoor seating (in the back). There are two entrances, one in the front and one in the back. The coffee is a 1.50$ for a house mug with one free refill and each additional one is $1. They have wifi with a password but I could not get it to work while I was there (the next time we went it did work and the password is jamesbrown). There are a few power outlets in the outside setting area, I am not sure about the inside. They have locked bathrooms that you have to ask for the key to use.
This is the kind of cafe I would have if I had one. Combining a bookstore with a cafe is a great idea. Echo Park seems to be a some what of a hippster area, so this place makes perfect since. It is a nice area, with a huge park called Elysian Park. There are several clubs and bars; and this place called the Time Travel Mart (Which I can only assume is a mini-mart, since it was always closed when we walked by) but the place looks cool from the outside and the sign says “Whenever you are, we’re already then.”
Echo park is pretty close to Downtown, within walking distance. Not too long of a bus ride from Hollywood and a 45 minute or so bus ride from Santa Monica and Venice Beach.
